Did You Know? Ever wonder how the miracle product that simultaneously eliminates bike-chain squeaks and loosens bolts was invented? Would you believe me if I said three scientists invented it as a means of protecting the surface of Atlas missiles from corrosion in the '50s? This isn't a plot from a bad sci-fi movie; this is how WD-40 was invented. On the scientists' 40th attempt, they were successful, and WD-40 was born. (The name originally stood for Water Displacement-40th attempt.) Today, WD-40 is a household name synonymous with the do-it-all spray for the toughest of tasks, from breaking rusty bolts loose to lubricating and protecting metals. With a seemingly infinite number of uses, we continually discover new purposes for WD-40.
While working on cars, one may discover many different uses as well. From header bolts to exhaust hangers, WD-40 can handle the job. During the WD-40 B-Series Power Shootout, we realized how useful WD-40 was while building motors. Breaking nuts and bolts loose on a motor are just the beginning. The tuners used WD-40 to lubricate the sleeves and to clean engine internals during engine builds and breakdowns. Whenever there was a stubborn fastener to deal with, a few shots of WD-40 easily solved the problem and allowed the tuners to progress. Like industry benchmarks Kleenex and Xerox, WD-40 has become the household word for solvent, protectant and all-around solution to many common tasks. Without a doubt, those three scientists from the '50s enhanced today's world with their invention, and it will continue to do so tomorrow.
