17th Annual Osaka Auto Messe

Text By Brandon Leung, Photography by Brandon Leung

While most look to Tokyo for cutting-edge automotive trends and technological advancements, a little known fact is that many of Japan's famed aftermarket manufacturers and tuners actually hail from the Kansai area of Osaka. And while the Tokyo Auto Salon is often regarded as the more distinguished older brother, the Osaka Auto Messe can be viewed as the cooler, more core, and younger sibling.

Annually held at INTEX (International Exhibition Space) Osaka for three days, this car show draws tuners, manufacturers, and enthusiasts from across the globe into the Suminoe-ku district of Japan. Advertised as a "dress-up" show, cars of the unordinary as well as models dressed in cosplay were encouraged to attend.

Most would say that the Japanese VIP scene actually started in Kansai and the bippu section was well represented with Junction Produce, Wald, and Aim Gain having a strong presence with some of the best examples of the scene. Some of these vehicles defy physics by placing a highly aggressive wheel fitment, coupled with extreme camber and surgeon like fender rolling, to create the ultimate look.

With a lack of sports car offerings from Japanese manufacturers, the Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ, and Nissan GT-R were the cars of the show. TRD showed off their Griffon concept, which just hit a personal best of 58.40 seconds at the Tsukuba Circuit. One of the weirdest hybrids was a SR20DET-powered 86, say what you will about the mix-matched heart, but a turbocharged 2.0-liter might be just what the doctor ordered. Miura-san of Rocket Bunny fame, who also resides in the western region of Japan, was showing off a fine example of an 86 with his newly released 6666 mesh wheels. On the far spectrum were a number of flashy rides as well as Bosozoku machines with exhaust pipes proudly jutting out their rear sections.

One thing that is undeniable about Osaka is that they definitely have their own unique style, and that shines through with the personalities from this area.
