HKS Premium Salon
HKS set up a pavilion showcasing their full lineup of new products and technology. Among the newest and hottest items were a number of FR-S, S2000, and GT-R R35 products. From the GT1000 turbo kit, Max IV SP suspension, to a 4.1L stroker kit for the VR38DETT platform, we can look forward to seeing plenty of new and exciting items making their way to the mainland within a short period of time.
A short walk though the Fuji tunnel takes you to the Customized Car Carnival, HKS's newest event to this year's festival. The HCC car show delivered a variety of show-worthy rides from across Japan, ranging from the mild to wild. A mind-boggling Honda CR-V with R34 frontend conversion was the talk of the day. We overhead the owner say, "I've always wanted a R34 but could never afford one. That's when I decided to build my own dream car." Hate it or love it, this Honda B20 turbocharged machine delivers 550 hp and will smoke a majority of cars on the road.
Drift Exhibition and GT Supercharger Max Power!
Throughout the day sounds of tire screeching were heard echoing from the paddocks as a drift challenge was taking place on the west course track. The drift event showcased both pro and amateur drift drivers smoking their tires around the tightly designed course. On the opposite side a dyno was setup to check the power levels of pro shop demo cars. The highest horsepower recorded vehicle of the day wasn't a car, but rather a twin-turbo Toyota Tundra truck that delivered an impressive 590 whp at low boost setting.
HKS Demo Car Exhibition and Ride-Along
A few select fans were treated to a hair-raising ride around the Fuji track with notable drivers, including Nobuteru "NOB" Taniguchi and Orido "Max" Manabu. I was also fortunate enough to ride shotgun with Taniguchi in the HKS-prepped 86 as he smoked the tires.

HKS GT1000+ Time-Attack
As the fun-filled day was quickly winding down to its end, the track was prepped for an exclusive time-attack session dedicated to the HKS 1000+ GT-R R35. This special machine is equipped with a custom-built 4.1L VR38DETT engine delivering over 1,200 hp and outfitted with a full aero package reminiscent of a GT racing car. Outfitted with a set of racing slicks, the 1000+ driven by Taniguchi Nobuteru hit the course but was only able to muster a 1:41; problems plagued the vehicle and it was forced to pit for repairs. With a flurry of repairs made on the car and a last ditch effort to improve its previous lap times, Taniguchi wheeled the car across the start/finish line just as strong head winds and snow began falling on the back side of the track with a new a new tuner car record of 1:39.853 seconds.
