Kamakura City in the Kanagawa prefecture, the political and cultural capital of the Shogunate from 1192 to 1333, is noted for its temples, historic sites and rustic surroundings. Kamakura's principal attraction is the "Daibutsu" (The Great Buddha), a bronze sculpture of Buddha in a seated meditating pose. The Great Buddha, situated in the Kotokuin Temple, stands 37 feet high and has a stairway that leads to a viewing platform in the knee. Another big attraction is the Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine. An impressive set of stairs leads up to the impressive temple originally built in 1191. There are a number of other attractions in the area as well as a museum and many local shops offering the region's arts and crafts.
