Super Lap Battle
Super Lap Battle's fourth of five time-attack Qualifying rounds recently went down at Fontana, CA's Auto Club Speedway (full course), and bore witness to the emergence of a new competitor. Subaru specialists LIC Motorsports shookdown their newly completed '05 STI in competition against veteran JC Meynet and his infamous Harman Motive-built STI, with LIC wheelman Russ Warr posting a time of 1:45.69 to JC's 1:43.563-good for Second Place, and also enough to make us wonder if an upset is in sight. Formula D Diaries contributor Tyler McQuarrie gripped a 1:40.870 First Place run from behind the wheel of the BC/C-West carbon S2000 in Unlimited FR, and also ran faster in Crawford's STI than any other Unlimited AWD competitor-too bad the team fitted it with illegal slicks, forcing Tyler to give up the only Unlimited win of the day to . . . um . . . Tyler. Only one more Qualifying round remains before Buttonwillow, CA Finals on November 11th. For info/rules/registration, visit: www.superlapbattle.com

Cupcakes For Tools
We often take for granted the convenience of walking into an automotive parts store and being able to pick and choose from the hundreds of specialized tools lining the shelves. Obviously, the more unique or specialized the tool, the more expensive it becomes, but at what cost does paying a premium for tools become a luxury, more than a necessity? Jerry Hamilton, a 15-year automotive technician with Toyota Headquarters in Torrance, CA, offered us a simple, yet effective tool that's more frequently used at your local bakery, than your local garage. Jerry uses cupcake baking tins to organize small parts removed from the hundreds of Toyotas and Scions he's repaired over the years. Using a simple numbering system above each cake tray, Jerry is able to effectively differentiate and reference thousands of small parts without having to rifle through one big bin. "For less than a few bucks, I can organize different parts into the cake tray and won't have to worry about misplacing anything," says Jerry. Simple, effective, and just plain smart. We're calling it the "Jerry Rig".
