Import Faceoff
If it seems like every month we're bringing you coverage of Import Faceoff (IFO) racers winning their classes with single-digit E.T.s turned out by big-horsepower imports, well . . . we are. But don't think that means that a win by an average Joe can't happen. IFO's latest two events proved that, beginning in Jacksonville, FL, where number-one FWD qualifier Cesar Olin in his 9.34-second Civic (which had the field covered by a big gap) broke in the Finals, allowing Joe Mixon to take the win with a high 10-second pass in his Civic. But FWD competition in Baton Rouge, LA, was even more controversial when underdog Johnny Williams upset points leader (and much faster competitor) Aaron Lopez without ever leaving the line. As both racers sat on only one staging light, each waiting for the other's tires to cool and nerves to build, Johnny inched up so shallow that his second staging light flicked once-never staying lit-but that flicker counted as a full stage for Johnny and triggered the 15-second countdown Aaron had to stage fully and make his pass. Problem was, Aaron didn't see the flicker and continued to sit at the line until time ran out, forfeiting the win to Johnny.
Competition in other classes was as fierce as always-including Street Car classes and a street-style "Grudge" class-as was the show portion of both events, which Team Sunworks dominated for the seventh year in a row.
