1998 Honda Accord - Dark Horse

A Turbocharged And Intercooled Four-Cyl Accord. What!!?

1998 Honda Accord Wheel

We often hear a common refrain among Accord owners: "No one makes any products for my car!" Well listen up and pay attention: Here is a 1998 Accord that has been tricked to the fullest, with sleek body treatments, big wheels...and a full turbo system, complete with front-mount intercooler!

"How can it be?" you gasp. "I've spent the last two years on the Internet and I can't find shit for my Accord!!"

Before you give birth to something disturbing and vaguely cheese-like right there in your Polo underwear, take a note: This system is a one-off custom setup, so you're not going to find it on any website or parts catalog...not yet anyway. The car is owned by one Steve Roybal of Baldwin Park, Calif. When he first set out to turn it into a modified show sled, he found himself in the same boat as countless other hapless Accord owners. Then he met this dude named Joey from Spark Motorsports in Hacienda Heights, Calif. One night they got to discussing the ins and outs of the Accord market, or the considerable lack thereof, and by the end of the evening Roybal had convinced his newfound friend to fabricate a custom forced induction system for his Accord.

According to Roybal, the Accord spent about a month in Spark's garage, and a month later it was ready to go. The system is centered around a Turbonetics T3 unit mounted on a custom Spark-fabricated exhaust manifold. A modest boost pressure of 6 psi is maintained at the manifold by a beefy Turbonetics Deltagate, good for horsepower applications of up to 400 hp, according to Turbonetics' website. A secondary blow-off valve has been located on the intake pipe next to the intake manifold.

After driving the turbine, exhaust gases are shot out the back by a custom 3-in. Sparks exhaust and muffler. Polished stainless plumbing pipes air throughout the system, running it through a front-mount Spearco air-to-air intercooler core and then to a ported intake manifold, which has additionally been jetted with a 50-shot NOS system for some extra "pow" when it's needed most. An MSD 6-A ignition module and coil holds flame up to the air/fuel mixture.

Underneath the panels, OBX coil-overs drop the car down over MHT V-10 18-in. wheels wrapped up in 225/40/18 Falken rubbers. Enlarged Spark brake rotors replace the small stock Accord discs up front. A Tenzo sway bar ties the suspension together in front.

Inside the cockpit, a custom entertainment system designed by Ultimate Image keeps Roybal and passengers entertained on the road and enthralls showgoers at the events. At the forefront sits a Pioneer AVX P-7000 CD/TV unit, which throws signals out to a pair of Autotek amps, one dual channel at 250 watts and one quad channel at 500 watts. A Pioneer DSP Audio Processor mixes the frequencies up and tosses 'em out to Cerwin Vega components and three 10-in. Ultimate subs. Juice is supplied by an Optima battery and EFX cables. You probably already noticed the PS2 residing in the glove compartment.
