Subaru WRX STi - Four Days Of Stimulation

Analyzing The New Subaru STI

7:27 PMThis is what I had been waiting for--a late-model Ford Mustang! Piloting the Mustang is Wade, who looks as if he designed the confederate flag himself. This time I said screw riding the clutch, I'm dumping it out of the hole! Since I tried the DCCD on LOCK, I decided to put the DCCD back on AUTO: .580 light 8.69 at 79.2 to a 9.37 at 75.6.

8:13 PMJerry in a Camero decided to challenge me and, of course by this time I was feeling pretty bold, so I excepted. This time, I tried the DCCD to most of the power in the rear. That didn't work to well but I still won: .513 light 9.06 at 76.4 to a 10.80 at 64.1mph. I realized that the six-speed tranny is bullet proof so I dumped the clutch again.

8:24 PMI'm feeling Albertos start to argue with my stomach so I find the nearest port-o-pottie. I should have waited 20 minutes after eating before I got behind the wheel.

9:02 PMA very healthy-sounding Mustang pulled up so I challenged him. The owner, Roger, warns me that his car has too much power for radials. Seeing how the DCCD wasn't working for me, I put it back to AUTO. It has me a little worried and I red lighted, but still won: .485 light 8.71 at 78.2mph to 10.60 at 83.2mph. He wasn't lying with that trap speed.

9:22 PMI was waiting for a race against any 2003 Dodge Neon. Well, what do you know? I lined up against a Yellow 2.0-liter turbo owned by Gretchen. Man, that was a joke: .510 light 8.62 at 79.5mph against a 10.57 at 70.0mph. Good trap speed on the Neon though.

9:33 PMEddie in a late-model Firebird challenged the STi and, of course, I excepted. I cut my best light of the night: .506. but I underestimated the power of Eddie's Firebird. About twenty feet before the finish, I bounced the rev-limiter and he blew by me. My 8.72 at 78.2 was no match for his 8.53 at a whopping 87.5mph. Finally, I was defeated.

9:34 PMI asked Eddie for another challenge since I bounced the rev-limiter hard but he felt his night was over and he left the track. I wanted to make one more pass before I left, so I lined up with a supercharged Integra. I won that match but the worst part about it was I ran an 8.50 at 80 mph. This would have been enough to beat Eddie's Firebird.

9:35 PMI call it a night and pass out at my parent's house, since it's in the area.

Day Three (Saturday)7:30 AMIt's 7:30 a.m.! I never wake up that early on a weekend, but I'm dying to autocross the car so I'm pretty much sane.

8:00 AM Back at Qualcomm for an SCCA autocross event. As I pulled into the parking lot I must have missed the sign that said "Porsches Only". Turn's out one of the Porsche owners told me I was on the wrong side of the parking lot and I was at the other end, on the bigger track. It makes me wonder how I would have done?

8:22 AMI met a gentleman by the name of Dennis Baker who works for SCCA of San Diego. I must admit, the guy bent over backward to get me in the field so I owe him and the rest of the gang in the SCCA San Diego region a big thanks. At first I thought I was going to run up against a gang of WRXs in the GS class but when they saw what I was in, they moved me up to AS class. In other words, I was now up against Vettes and Vipers.

10:30 AMIn the middle of all the waiting I was bombarded once again with the same questions from the night before. Man, I really should have made a flyer with the most FAQ.

11:15 AMIt was finally time to run but before the start I decided to walk the track and get a feel for the turns. Unfortunately, there were a lot of high-speed straights which gave the advantage to the Vettes and Vipers. Towards the end of the track was where the twisties began and the STi six-speed could take advantage.
