Dynamic Autosports - It's Getting Hot In Here...

There Couldn't Be A Better Home For Our Orphan Engine

Skunk2When we first started this shootout we knew that Skunk2 would cause the most controversy. They proved us right by throwing out the blueprints for their old design and drawing up a new plan with a completely new, never been tested, engine combination. For the record this was another wrench in the cog for our shootout. As we stated in the second part of the Skunk2 build up, they enlisted the help of Pauter machine for their billet connecting rods. The last minute changes mean that the original rods Pauter had arranged for them were scraped for custom rods that would work with the new 91mm stroke instead of the rods that were set up for their original 89mm stroke. Now that the new design incorporates a custom rod, Pauter needed to get its thinking cap on and design a rod to work with the Skunk setup. The problem is that to make one-off rods requires time, which usually means a 10-week turn around. Since this shootout has one last issue to go, the rods won't be completed in time. Pauter is going to attempt to have the rod done in time, but if all goes wrong Skunk will go back to their original plan. Head cheese Dave Hsu stated: "We are attempting to cut costs by sticking with what you [2NR] have given us so we're going to modify the stock 87.2mm crank to a 91mm. The price of modifying it is much cheaper than the price of a brand new 91mm Honda crank."

For this session we went to Skunk to find out what their plans are for the cylinder head. As you may know, Skunk doesn't build motors or ports cylinder heads for the public, but when it comes to their imagination, they are all off the shelf from Skunk2. For the most part they build engines and port cylinder heads to test new products based on what they learn on their racecars.
