MM: First of all, if a person is willing to spend $10,000 on a car, it's a good assumption he or she knows some of the modifications aren't necessarily CARB approved. I think it's the shop's moral obligation to tell the customers if a part is illegal. Does a shop owner have time to say that to every single person who calls or walks in? Probably not. Changes down the line might ratify laws to pursue them.
2NR: What are your thoughts on kids nowadays and modified vehicles?
MM: Kids aren't dope running, shooting, or gang banging. Taking your hard-earned money and putting it into your vehicle shows pride. Now that you have something nice on your car, you are being treated like a criminal. I don't think it's right and I don't like it. I believe the pendulum has gone too far. You have to ask yourself if this infringes on your freedom. I think people need to be aware of these problems or things will get out of hand. I believe you, by writing this article, will expose an issue many don't want to deal with and that's good. I'm not saying break the law-just don't go crazy or insane. For the record I have to say most of the law enforcement in San Diego are good, decent officers. They don't pull bullshit. But that doesn't mean bullshit doesn't happen.
2NR: Let me read a quote by Sergeant Sloan about you: "The job of an attorney is to represent a client. We are aware of the tactics he uses, and we'll end a lot of those in the future. He is very creative."
MM: I appreciate the complement. The bottom line is I don't have any animosity toward the San Diego Police Department and I appreciate the fact that he thinks I am creative, but my job is to represent my client. It's not like it's some vendetta. The fact is I have a job to do just like they have a tough job of dodging bullets. That's a professional response and I like that. I believe 99 percent of the officers in the San Diego Police Department are good.
