Eclectic Revival - Nissan 350Z

Mastergrade Motorsports Does It Again: Further Redefining The Art Of Body Kits

Underneath the wide girth of the chassis is a set of stout Kinesis wheels, 19x9.5 in the front and 20x13 the back. Presented with extremely deep lips, the Kinesis wheels are wrapped up in Michelin rubbers. Behind them is a set of 14-inch Rotora brake rotors and brake lines, helping Perry avoid crashing into other cars when he decides to perform more wind testing. Controlling the suspension while the car is on the track or street is some quality Tein Flex coilovers, working together with special Mastergrade 12mm anti-roll bars. It's a sight to behold looking up the chassis, seeing the immensely wide wheels, highlighted by the red brake calipers and signature green Tein suspension.

Under the hood is a 427 hp, twin turbo powerplant. Unlike the highly customized exterior, the engine is all powered by bolt-on parts, a misnomer considering these bolt-on parts come from Power Enterprises, an aftermarket staple in Japanese tuning. In fact, mostly every part in the engine bay is made by Power Enterprises. The twin turbo setup is straight from their catalog and boasts one of the cleanest, OEM-like arrangements. Looking at the system, it seems as if the car came with twin turbochargers, but still convey the feeling of having a large set of cojones.

Made of entirely 304 stainless steel, this highly coveted twin turbo setup comes with a front-mount intercooler and a high capacity oil pan. The turbos are a high-response PE 1420 which delivers smooth and useable power across the entire RPM band. Surprisingly enough, the internals are all bone stock, which will soon be changed once Perry and his team at Mastergrade find the time to upgrade it. Delivering the spent exhaust gases is a Nismo exhaust system. And transferring the majority of the 427 hp to the ground is a strong ACT clutch that is probably responsible for a lot of skid marks across the mean streets of Long Beach.

Inside the monster is a full roll cage, fabricated by Perry and Mastergrade. It not only helps stiffen the chassis, but also is useful if he rolls over after going insane speeds on the highway. Perry says that the roll cage is an indication of what's to come in the future. This 350Z was built in no less than six months specifically for the SEMA Show, but the real goal is to compete in various drift events this year. Perry is in the process of hiring a Japanese drifter to drive the car, and he wants to win a drifting event to prove his body kits are both appealing and functional.

Without a doubt, Perry's Mastergrade Motorsports has a rising stock in the industry. He put his company on the map with the yellow Honda S2000 and is solidifying the Mastergrade name with this Nissan 350Z. His knowledge of automotive design and unorthodox way of conveying his vision to the car is to be applauded. And the fact that it's functionally proven on the road makes it even that much better.
