Looking for a 700-plus hp swap in your Silvia S15? This 3S-GTE Toyota motor sits lower towards the ground while mounted further towards the firewall to promote improved weight distribution and improved handling.
As Chinen's automotive skills blossomed, so did the number of customers as he built close relationships with many who frequently visited. With overwhelming numbers of clients filtering in and out of the mechanic shop and a strong push of moral support from his friends and family, Chinen decided to open his very own shop, which was conveniently named after his first and last initials. "We love doing what other shops would otherwise hate to do. Building cars and transplanting engine swaps is what we have built our reputation and name on over the past 15 years."
"I love the concept of engine swaps. There's no such thing as an engine swap that can't be done." Chinen has taken everything from Nissan RB26DETT Skyline motors to 2JZGU Supra engines and shoehorned them into the smaller likes of a Nissan S13 or S14 chassis. While creativity and imagination is one part of Chinen repertoire, the man behind the name C&Y is best at finding random junk pieces from a scrap yard and turning them into usable parts. Such parts used on cars are the beefy 8.5 rear end from a Toyota Land Cruiser which was meticulously measured for clearance and grafted onto an AE86 Hachiroku street/drag car. "My favorite is taking an engine, for example, from Nissan and shoehorning it into a Mazda. We take something completely different and blend them into one." Chinen was quick to point out that his shop motto since day one was whenever ripping out a factory engine and replacing it with a powerplant that was 2 or 3 times larger in liters over a factory spec powerplant, it has to be fast but reliable at the same time. "There's no point and obviously no fun in building a custom engine swap vehicle if it's going to break down after every race-what's the point?"

Shipped from the U.S., this Mitsubishi Starion now prowls the street using an Infiniti Q45 V8 engine as its weapon of choice.
With so many engine swaps in various chassis taking place, we asked Chinen which vehicle/engine combination proved to be the most difficult. Chinen claims, "It had to be the Eunos (Mazda Miata). We shoehorned a S2000 (F20C) powerplant into the vehicle. The vehicle's engine bay was fairly tight and caused some problems, but the car was definitely fast with approximately 250hp. That car is currently running on the streets in Osaka. But, over the years, we've seen a number of vehicles require more attention than others. One would be a 1967 Toyota 2000GT that C&Y installed a 2JZ transplant into. Not only was the vehicle worth more than $150,000 dollars in value, we were attempting to install an engine that was built three decades later. Current projects in the works for C&Y include a 1200hp 2JZ-powered Silvia S15. Using a Jericho air shifter, and custom Turbonetics turbo, Chinen makes plans for dominating the drag racing world and setting multiple records on drag strips throughout Japan. Another project is to build a 1000hp AE86 and KP (Toyota Starlet) using a 2JZ, with individual throttle bodies. "I would like to race Oto-kun in the C&Y Sunny with a SR20DE on nitrous, while my Starlet goes all motor, in an all-out quarter-mile drag war. Both vehicles will be using a Jericho transmission and will sport similar horsepower numbers, which should make for a very interesting race. < I laugh in absolute amazement > Well...what can I say? We love to build fast cars, fun cars and reliable vehicles here."

What makes all C&Y engine swap vehicles unique? A customer can drive up to C&Y in their Toyota Crown Wagon and have a new, rip roaring 2JZ-GTE engine transplanted in a three-month turnaround time with the look of a super clean factory install-assuming that customer is not requesting 800 to 900 hp, which naturally increases the build time and raises the price. And the bonus that's sure to make competitors jealous with envy? C&Y's install and pricing include legal documentation to automatically turn your revamped Crown rocketship into a fully registered street-legal machine. Are you jealous yet? We sure are.
