With super car looks must come super car power. To try and extract an extra 50 hp going the N/A route with the already efficient C32B motor would be hard. To exceed the desired 400hp to the wheels would be damn-near impossible. Forced induction was Will's only option. A Boostzilla supercharger kit, the first of its kind, was sourced from Dali Racing and installed by John David Mets (JDM to his friends) of Revenge Motorsports. The blower, along with a Boostzilla intake, GT-One titanium exhaust, Comptech headers, Denso Iridium plugs, Supra fuel pump, HKS goodies (Twin Power ignition, Super Sequential blow-off valve, 680cc top feed injectors, fuel regulator, fluid caps) however, wasn't making the power Will expected.
"Because of the drive-by-wire and OBD II on my NSX, the car had massive tuning issues," explains Will. To cure his Acura's ailments, Will contacted tuner extraordinaire, Jon Kuroyama of HKS and Kuroyama Tuning fame. Jon mocked up a custom harness for a HKS F-Con V-Pro to sync with the OBD II equipped NSX. Using an AEM water/methanol injection for safety, Mr Kuroyama managed to coax 422.7 hp to the wheels at 7,600 rpm with 295 lb-ft of torque on HKS' Dynojet. Like Homer after he done polished off a six-pack of Duff beer, Will was all smiles.
For good measure, Will installed a DME engine torque damper to reduce the stress from the extra power and slapped on a Dali Racing radiator shield and Mugen low-temp thermostat to alleviate any cooling issues. A short shift kit from Titanium Dave quickens the counterweighted Mugen shift knob, while a Comptech Power Grip II clutch and lightened flywheel quickens the VTEC's revs.
Stiffening the NSX's suspension is a set of Tein Flex coilovers. Dali Racing 22mm front and rear sway bars, NSX-R front underbrace and front non-compliance clamps from Titanium Dave fights chassis flex. Staggered Advan Kreuzer V (18x8 +45 front; 19x10 +45 rear) rims shod in Falken FK452s (225/35/18 front; 275/30/19 rear) barely conceal the Brembo GT brake kit and Dali carbon brake deflector shields in the front or the rear Power Slot rotors and Dali Racing brake lines.
In the two-seater cabin, Hyper Black Bride Ergo seats mounted on MO-type seat brackets enhance lateral support. Important since Will's back has been going from all the wrenching and watching over his two kids; although his wife, Janel, would say otherwise. Besides being worth its weight in gold, a Mugen steering wheel and button and Mugen Competition pedals provide driver feedback while adding JDM flavor. Adding more J-spice are the NSX-R shift boot and carbon plate, as well as the carbon-fiber door trim garnish from Downforce and Defi BF boost gauge, Ver. 2 control unit and Defi Link Display. John Tanaka from JT Audio wired up all the electronics and custom installed a Clarion VRX 755VD head unit, Kicker four-channel amp and speakers.
Besides his daughter's stroller, the NSX is the longest Will's owned a set of wheels. "I've had the car for three years now. I did nothing for the first six months but then I slowly started working on it here and there when I had free time," says Law. And looking at the results, it was free time very well spent. With the responsibilities of work, family, eating, friends, cars, wrenching and more eating, Will still managed to build a car worthy of his cartoon counterparts, The Homer--only cooler. Maybe. Besides learning how to type, it makes me wonder what I've done with all my free time.
D'oh!
