1998 Honda PreludeOwner: George Hartman; Wexford, Pa.What would you do if you had a Prelude that was desperately begging to be souped up? Obviously, you'd slap on some bolt-ons and make that H22 sing! George Hartman did just that and then took it a step further. The DOHC VTEC engine was upgraded inside and out in order to squeeze every last ounce of performance out of its four cylinders. For starters, Hartman has gone and upgraded the pistons with a set of Japanese Type S 11.0:1 pistons. Further improvements include upgraded exhaust and intake cams, inner and outer valve springs, and larger intake and exhaust valves. Hartman then took the engine to the machine shop, where the head was cleaned and polished with a six-angle valve job, the intake and exhaust runners were ported and the combustion chambers were cleaned and polished along with a machined V-Tech throttle shaft. Air enters the engine through an AEM cold air intake and, once mixed with the fuel, is ignited with the aid of Magnecor 8mm spark plug wires and an MSD SCI ignition with Blaster 3 coil. An STR fuel rail provides some extra fuel capacity. The spent exhaust gases exit through a DC Sports ceramic header, which feeds a Random Technology high-flow cat and GReddy Power Extreme exhaust system. Further adjustments and power enhancements come by means of AEM adjustable cam gears and underdrive pulleys as well as an APEXi Super AFC with V-Tech air flow controller. With power issues addressed, Hartman went on to improve the suspension with a Tanabe Sustex Pro-Street suspension kit, as well as DC Sports strut bars and tie bars. A K-MAC camber and caster adjustment kit keeps the car on the straight and narrow. Braking duties are handed off to a Brembo big brake system, which clamps a set of cross-drilled rotors. Housing these brakes are a set of Volk Racing AV3 wheels wrapped with Nitto Extremes, sized 215/40ZR17.
