Dude, like . . . Shit man, you know?!
Ok, so . . . I don't even know where to begin. Nick Pennington, man! What an ass-bag! Were does he get off? Not asking that literally, so I could pay him a visit at a dark bus stop one night . . . because I'm really not a violent mofo (except for that one time that I'm not supposed to talk about). But what is he thinking, saying that no one wants to hear what the "glimmering role-model in prison has to say"? Hey Nick, see if you can make out this bit of advice: F@#% Y*$!! Money in prison is still green (occasional substance residue aside), ain't it? We're car guys through and through. We're probably the most dedicated readers out there - Nick's mom would be soooo jealous if she knew how many different sets of hands touch each prison issue of 2NR everyday, over and over again! Plus, Nick, who do you think makes your fanboy "STNGKLR" license plates? Us, bitch! Everyone f*cks up occasionally - live and learn. I will say this: prison life has its moments, but it really sucks overall. I'd much rather be building and racing cars all day than reading about them. 2NR, if I don't f*ck up again when I get out, know that you had something to do with it!
Jay Morris,
Washington State D.O.C. Believe it or not Jay, yours was one of the mildest responses we got to Sir Pennington's letter. We thought it might stir a little controversy among the incarcerated community . . . but damn! Seems you guys really don't like to be talked down to. And-aside from the occasional joker-it also seems most of you who read us really look forward to living constructive lives on the outside, which is why we print your letters in the first place. I'm sure you'd be the first to tell the rest of our readership how bad it sucks to be in your position (no pun intended). A little reminder of how much worse-or better-things can be might do us all some good.
Ok . . . glad that's over with! See those two large stacks of mail? Those are your handwritten submissions to Postal that we've been lagging on reading for the past few months. Well, al least that's what those of you in prison sent us. And probably 80 percent of what you see here is in response to Nick Pennington's doubts that we should even run "jailmail". We'll start you off this month with our favorite response:
Box o' Rice
In perusing the November '09 issue of 2NR, I came across the blurb about the Hyperfest event in 411. They had a rice competition?! I wish I still had my '97 Sentra that I riced out on purpose a few years ago! Check out the pics-needless to say, no one will let me enter it in any other show . . . not that anyone would cruise to the shows with me anyway. Some friends I have. No one respects the planning and execution that goes into a proper cardboard bodykit.
Jason Timberger,
Newburgh, NY Good work sir! We definitely like where you're coming from on the kit-we can't imagine a worse (better?) way to do it. And the paint is f*cked to just the right degree to bring a tear to the eye! The "Sentra" badge is cause for concern, though-after modification, we feel your car more closely resembles a GT-R. Our advice: procure a knock-off badge from your local Autozone, paint it yellow and affix it with rolled duct tape. And where's your red mono-wiper and matching vinyl windshield brow-top and bottom? What's the matter with you?! Whitesnake Fan
I must say, it almost brought a tear to my eye to see JR's Mustang GT in 2NR, for two reasons: 1.) Because I wanted to have the first Mustang written about in 2NR, and more importantly, 2.) To see a Mustang in an import mag in such a positive light. For years I've only dreamt of imports and domestics coexisting on the same plane, in the same mags, and it's finally come true. I want to thank you guys and JR for your Oct. '09 article "Tokyo Drift . . . and Then Some". I now have a new goal: To have the first V-6 Mustang in 2NR (don't laugh; I'm serious). If I ever get my '94 LS out of the shop, maybe I'll build that if the whole Mustang thing doesn't pan out. Just know that you've given me hope. Kudos gentlemen!
Kaliph Mahmud-Bey
Jacksonville, NC Sorry to break the news to you, Kaliph . . . "the whole Mustang thing" definitely will NOT-repeat: NOT- be panning out between our pages. It was our pleasure to bring you the story of JR's drifting craziness in Japan, but the particular car he drove was only a small part of what it was all about-of how America's unique refinement on a traditionally Japanese pastime relates to the land where it was created. But yeah, we feel you . . . just don't expect any more of it!
