Up Close & Personal: Alie Layus

Alie-Zay

Text By Joel Marasigan

2nr: What's the first thing you think of when you roll out of bed in the morning?
AL: Going to Starbucks. But yesterday I didn't get up 'till 2:30 and today I got up at 10:45. That's really early for me. I was going to go workout, but I never made it.

2nr: I've seen your body. You might not need too much work. Do you workout often?
AL: In the past 2 months, I haven't worked out at all. I'm thin but I'm out of shape.

2nr: You look in shape to me.
2nr: What's the most difficult thing for you to do right now?
AL: Keeping motivated. I'm really trying to do commercial stuff and break into the mainstream. It would be easier to get noticed and make a name for yourself if there weren't so many other pretty girls-but the fact is that there are so many beautiful girls out there. Going on auditions and getting turned down so many times really takes a toll.

2nr: When you walked up I really noticed you. Do you think you have a "style"?
AL: Well, when I'm out kicking it I'm really basic-jeans, nice top. By the way, there's only one brand of jeans that I wear, Frankie B's because they fit me perfect! When I go to clubs I like my clothes small. I'll usually wear a hand-torn skirt.

2nr: Do you tear them yourself or have someone tear them for you?
AL: I do it myself.

2nr: Hmmm. Erotically violent with a touch of sexy.
AL: And I like wearing really high shoes because I'm short.

2nr: Is everything about you "real"?
AL: Yes?
2nr: (I pause, break eye contact for a split second) I agree.

2nr: What's the dream job.
AL: I don't know. There's a billion things I want to do. I want to own my own clothing company just like everybody else. I'd love to have a clothing company that makes the exact kind of stuff that I wear-like the torn skirts. OH! I'd also love to own my own nightclub. I love that it's always changing and it's always different. It's not that type of job where you go and sit in an office for 9 to 5 every day. I can't do that.

2nr: Everyone that's in San Diego is always confused when a person decides to leave the city, why did you leave?
AL: I just wanted to get away from everything, plus I get bored easily. It was either here (Orange County) or San Francisco. I love the scene in the Bay, but not that hippie stuff. I like the music and the fashion. New York is too far but the shopping is great.

2nr: If I gave you a thousand bucks right now what would you shop for?
AL: I love purses and shoes. I'd grab a cute Chanel purse and...

2nr: A pair of Michael Kors? Miu Miu's? BCBGs?
AL: No I'd buy Dior glasses, Dior shoes, and a Dior or Chanel purse and some Frankie Bs. I feel guilty with perfume because I bought Lancome Miracle and I don't use it as often as I should.

2nr: What's the nicest thing that anyone ever given you?
AL: No one buys me stuff. I don't think I've gotten anything extravagant. OH! My dad bought me a Teacup Maltese. It's a white puffy dog...so cute!

2nr: People must give you compliments all the time.
AL: Yeah. But that gets old. I was raised in a family that really downplayed physical beauty and focused on teaching me to build my character and having a good personality. It's flattering that people say that I'm really pretty but I'd rather have someone tell me that I'm really funny.

Now, if you were going to give me a million dollars I'd spend it all on my parents and give them the life that they've always wanted. My whole thing about making money is based on that goal of mine.
2nr: You are soooo funny!
AL: Huh?
2nr: You'll never get a million from me.
