Most cities are deep asleep at 3:30 a.m. Bars are closed, the streets are empty, and the only sign of activity is the occasional traffic light. Vegas, however, is not one of those cities. Sitting in a lounge at the MGM Grand, the world is very much alive; electronic buzzes and bells from the fields of slot machines fill the air, and the seats are all full, brimming with people. All except one. The one I'm saving.
In walks Catherine Kluthe in skintight jeans and a low cut white t-shirt sized like it was from Baby Gap. God bless the inventor of the V-cut. As the crowd catches a glimpse of the 5'5" beauty the room pauses for a second, but Catherine is oblivious, a sure sign of years of male-attention garnering experience. I wave at her and she walks over to the chair I've been protecting, ignoring the hating glares of at least a dozen patrons. I am a god among men. Catherine pauses before sitting, smiles, and gives me the platonic sign of death: the handshake. No hug, no kiss. Any public-drawn notion of studliness was quickly squashed with palm on palm contact.
Bubble bursted: We sit down with the Vegas-native Miss Formula D and discuss the mechanics of drifting, how she managed to drift then destroy a Civic, some of her most sinful acts, and philosophically discuss the effects of flatulence. No, really.
How's it being the first ever Miss Formula D?
I love it because I have the best seats in the house! I get to go to all of the events and everyone involved is awesome!
How did the whole thing come about?
A while ago, I e-mailed Formula D, because I wanted to learn more about drifting. Months later, they called me to interview for the Miss FD position.
What prompted the e-mail to learn about drifting?
My little brother lived in Japan and would send me YouTube videos of it. Also, Rampage, the UFC fighter, is a close friend of mine, and he would talk about the events. I just thought the ability to control a vehicle like that was amazing. It made me jealous that I couldn't do it.
Have you tried drifting?
Not on purpose, but it's happened. [Laughs] I got a ticket and had to get a new vehicle.
Ticket and new vehicle?
I got into an accident for not paying attention while driving. I have driving ADD. I actually get really tired when I drive. I think it has something to do with my mom driving me around when I was little to get me to fall asleep.
What car were you in and how did you drift it?
It was in my little '03 Honda Civic. I don't know what I was thinking about, but I wasn't watching the road. I tried to not hit the car in front of me and ended up on the other side of the road. So, for a time I was sideways, smoke and all. Thank goodness no one was hurt! Just my car.
Lemme guess. You were doing your makeup?
No! I don't wear makeup unless I have to. I was just in La-la land.
No makeup? When do you have to wear it?
During shoots and modeling events. I hate makeup. It feels like I have dirt on my face.
You are the first model that I know who doesn't like makeup. Most girls I know won't go to the market without powder, lipstick, or their smoky eyes on.
I know! I think it's a waste of time. I am always at the market with no makeup. By the time those girls put on their makeup they could be back from the store. I just make sure I have a tight shirt on. No need for makeup then.
Exactly! Plus makeup is false advertisement. My biggest dating fear is a girl who looks completely nothing like she does with makeup.
[Laughs] Well, I won't go out at night without makeup. So, I guess I do a little false advertisement. But, I am super cute in the morning. I have adorable penguin pajamas. Plus, I make breakfast in bed. Guys like food.
It's damn-near 4 a.m., so I can attest to your natural beauty. Plus you cook!
Awwww...[laughs] Yes, I am an awesome cook. That's what everyone tells me. I know you like my cooking because you were stuffing your face with my cookies at the shoot.
