Researching Local Mechanics - Under The Hood

Inside The Industry

Do You Know Who's Working On Your Car?
Shade Tree Mechanics

The internet defines the term as an automotive mechanic who works part time at his home, tinkering on his vehicle under a shady tree in his yard. Derogatory as it's used, many of us fall into the "shade tree mechanic" set, as our weekends consist of repairing or modifying cars, whether it be under a tree or inside a friend's garage. For those individuals who lack mechanical skill and rely heavily upon repair shops to get the jobs done, we offer a warning: Research your local mechanics before dumping your hard-earned money into some stranger's hands.

If you cringed upon glancing at the photo to the left, you are not alone, my friend. Should you happen across a shop attempting to dyno the front wheels of a Miata anytime soon, a definite red-flag should be raised in your mind. Pictures like this beg the question: Do you know who's working on your car? Better yet, do they know how to work on your car? We've all heard the nightmare stories of bad engine tuning or faulty installations, but as much as we would like to blame the shops for having jacked-up these rides, the owners are just as guilty for taking their cars to some "shade tree mechanic". Shop around for a reputable mechanic who is qualified to do the job right, and don't be afraid to ask plenty of questions before consenting. What's the worst thing that can happen--moving on to another shop that's better qualified to take the job? Do it right the first time. Trust me . . . you won't regret it.
