1989 Nissan 240SX - Power Pages

Text By Richard Fong, Photography by Richard Fong

Conclusion
What a finale to a great series. This last installment really brought the ponies out, showing some of the SR20DET's power potential. We netted a total of 86.9 hp and 92.3 lb-ft of torque in this segment alone. Even though the horsepower curve is smooth through red line, the torque curve shows a bit of drop after 5500 rpm. Here we see deficiencies in the stock cams. You can really smooth out the torque curve with new cams and headwork. With a block strong enough to handle incredible boost pressure, we were able to bolt on and tune this engine to 300 hp on street gas. Don't forget, when we started this series, we baselined at 163.5 hp.Dyno 4 Hks Gt-Rs Turbo 300.6 Hp 300.6 Tq

Pros
You've got to love this turbo. Perfectly sized for street applications, it features full ball-bearings, which give you awesome response and spool up with nominal lag. Our forced-induction monster made 300.6 hp with 300.6 lb-ft of torque on the dyno. All those ponies at 21.7 psi of boost. Of course, fitment is right on and there are no additional modifications required to get the turbo into place.

Cons
It's an expensive upgrade, but oh-so worth it! Also, there's a small loss of power below 4000 rpm due to turbo lag. However, that sacrifice is quickly forgotten from 4000 rpm all the way to red line.

Notes
Be careful not to break the water and oil feed lines since they're all hard pipes with banjo bolts. Careless wrenching will leave bloodstains on your motor. If you happen to break any of the hard lines, don't despair, you can invest in some new fittings and stainless lines and be back on the road in no time. With this turbo, you can really explore higher boost levels.
