Pros
In 2004 the Honda S2000 power plant replaced the high revving 2.0L F20C engine with the 2.2L mill known as the F22C. Rated at 240 hp from the factory, the larger displacement F22C sports a broader powerband from a 2,157cc displacement while increasing its output to 162 lb-ft of torque over its previous models. Using a hybrid monocoque body and a high X-bone frame for body rigidity with 50/50 weight distribution, the S2K showcases a roadster that possesses exceptional handling, thanks to its re-tuned suspension and minor interior and exterior changes.
Cons
While the 2.0L power plant found in older generation S2Ks spun to the tune of 9,000 rpm, the larger displacement 2.2 liter was given a redline of 8,200 rpm, which many found as an initial drawback when looking to create power. For intensive testing purposes, we decided to go along the path of extreme powerpage testing and showcase what the more hardcore autocross or road race enthusiasts might consider when looking to dip into the 200-plus hp marker without the aid of forced induction.
Notes
As with any powerpage we conduct, the S2K was given a major tune-up before any of our testing commenced. It should be noted that the vehicle was used as a weekend machine and the mileage was on the low side, but that shouldn't encourage our readers to neglect performing the proper maintenance.
