The STI, even though it performs marvelously around any course (i.e. it will scare the living crap out of you) feels more at home in the mountains than a Grizzly during Salmon spawning season. It grips so well, you'd swear the Dunlop SP Sport 600s had claws. Turn the SI-Drive to "S#", the DCCD to "Auto (-)," and, if you're brave, the VDC off, and you'll thank Subaru engineers for going with four-piston Brembo calipers up front and ventilated rotors 30, 60, 90, and so one, minutes into it. Brakes, engine, drivetrain; the STi takes an extended beating and asks for more. Smiling.

Pure canyon-carving bliss, drive the new STi and you will respect what Subaru has done. Me? I retract my statement eluding this car to anything domestic. Detroit doesn't have a pugilist worthy of its class. Pound for pound, dollar for dollar, this is one of the world's greatest.

As for the challenger sitting in the opposite corner, turn the page.

Fuel Economy: Estimated EPA 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway

Drive Impression: This car is fast and handles like it's on the proverbial rails. The new '08 STI retains much of the rugged characteristics of the previous model but adds livability in the cabin. And the looks? You have to see it in person. It grows on you faster than a four-wheeled launch.

Tunability: Based on the EJ powerplant, with the exception of cams (due to the new Dual AVCS), we expect quick retrofits on most parts. And based on how popular the STi was here and in Japan, that means many parts, very soon.
