Cooling Mods - Cool Your Roll - Tech Knowledge

Cooling Parts That Make Power

How It Works: On command of the driver, the Ntercooler system delivers a steady stream of either CO2 or N2O to a turbocharged or supercharged vehicle's intercooler by way of a storage bottle, stainless supply line, and aluminum cooler ring. CO2 and N2O remain in liquid form when compressed in the Ntercooler's storage tank, and their temperatures drop to sub-zero levels upon being released into the supply line. Once applied to an intercooler, each freezing gas dramatically cools the engine's intake charge, condensing it and increasing the amount a turbo or supercharger can force into an engine's cylinders-increasing power output as a result.

How It Was Tested: We headed to Diamond Honda in City of Industry, Calif., to procure a fresh batch of N2O for testing, then strapped Carter's 240 to the rollers of G-Dimension's Dynojet where Stephen installed the Ntercooler. After idling it to temperature, we conducted three back-to-back runs to establish new baseline power and torque numbers, with the Ntercooler not activated. After allowing the car to cool, it was idled to temperature again and the test was repeated with the Ntercooler spraying from initial throttle to redline during three consecutive runs.

What It Delivered: Almost 20 additional horses and 10 lb-ft of torque. In our testing, the Ntercooler was only activated at initial throttle, to test its worth under its own power, but we expect even bigger power could have been made if the unit were activated for a good 10- or 15-second burst at idle before testing began-to really freeze down the intercooler.

Thermo-Tec Cool Air Tube Heat Shield

What It Does: Keeps an engine's intake charge cool; shielding it from radiant heat emitted by under-hood components

How It Works: The lace-up Cool Air Tube Heat Shield is constructed from heat-resistant material and designed to fit virtually any air intake or intercooler charge piping. Slip it over, cut to length, and lace up.

How It Was Tested: With the DC2 ratcheted down to the MD Automotive Dynojet, we conducted back-to-back dyno runs before and after installation of the product on the AEM Cold Air Intake of our project DC2 and used our trusty Auto Meter equipment to track intake temperatures both at idle, and during dyno testing.

What It Delivered: With coolant and cylinder head temperatures indicating our DC2 had reached its maximum idle temperature, its intake charge temperature slowly rose to a 98-degree high before installation of the product. Repeating the test after the 10-minute installation, temperatures only rose as high as 86 degrees. On the dyno the difference became less apparent, as heaping gulps of air from full-throttle pulls cooled the intake tubing as it rushed through. Numbers followed suit; gains were realized, but nothing earth-shattering.

Notes: By our reasoning, short ram intakes already draw air from within the warm engine bay, so blocking radiant heat won't make much of a difference. Look for bigger results with the product installed on cold-air induction systems of naturally aspirated cars or on the charge piping of intercooled turbo applications.
