Under The Hood Tool Kit

Right Tools for the Job
When it comes to wrenching on your pride and joy, owning the best mechanic's tool set money can buy should come as a no-brainer. But can you really afford them? Snap-on, Matco, Craftsman, Cornwell, Mac, Husky, Kobalt, Cooper, Armstrong, Proto, and Blackhawk are some of the best brands on the market today. These manufacturers are known to have outstanding warranties-an important feature for any tool if you've ever broken ratchets or sockets in the past. Some tools are easier to claim through warranty than others (e.g., walking into a store vs. waiting for a truck), but all can usually be returned for a replacement unit with little or no hassle. Before dropping thousands of dollars assembling your first tool kit, ask yourself how often will your tools be used. If it's only a few times a month, then I recommend budgeting your hard-earned money to purchase tools that are more affordable, but not outrageously cheap (avoid those 11-piece "chrome vanadium" socket sets that sell for $2.99 in the auto-part store's check-out line). Never sacrifice quality for price. If you're an avid mechanic and recognize the benefits of quality vs. cost, then by all means, insist on that expensive Snap-on BK6000 fiber-optic bore scope if it means getting the job done more efficiently. Whether you're hardcore or just a casual wrench who's looking to start up his first tool box, go with the brand that is easily accessible to you, has the best feel in your hand, and gives you the best bang for your buck. A few high-quality tools are worth far more than a whole set of bargain-bin specials.
